Tidings gets the scoop from Canada’s best sommeliers >>

  • When in doubt always ask. Whether you ask the sommelier or, in some instances, the waiter, you’ll get the benefit of experience. And in some cases, a good bottle of wine.

  • Don’t be afraid to pick wines according to style (Old World, fruity, etc.). Tell your sommelier what you like and he’ll find something to fit your request.

  • Not all sommeliers are condescending! If they recommend a wine that doesn't exactly fit your request, it may be because he’s tasted something better. Remember they eat — and drink — where they work.
