1            tsp granulated sugar

1/4         cup warm water (105ºF-115ºf)

2 1/4      tsp active dry yeast

2            tbsp butter, softened

1/4         cup granulated sugar

1 1/2      tsp salt

1            cup warm milk (105°F-115°F)

1            egg lightly beaten

3            cups all-purpose flour, + 1/2 cup

Method/Steps

1. Sprinkle yeast and 1 tsp sugar into the warm water. Set aside for about 10 minutes to allow the yeast to bloom.

2. Pour milk, butter, sugar, salt and egg into a mixing bowl. Stir together until butter is melted.

3. Set 1 cup of flour aside. Mix in remaining flour. Blend, on low speed, adding flour spoonful-by-spoonful until dough is no longer sticky and leaves the side of the bowl. Knead for about 8 minutes.

4. Place dough into a lightly greased bowl, cover loosely and let rise in a warm, draft-free place until doubled in size.

5. Cut the dough into golf ball-size pieces, shape into rounds. Let rise again until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

6. Brush surface with a wash made of either water and one lightly beaten egg or milk. Place rounds on a baking sheet. Bake at 350°F for about 20 minutes.
