Chia is back in style. The seed (not the pet) was a favourite of the Aztecs and Mayans. Research shows that can help improve heart health and stabilize blood sugar levels. It also contains the highest plant-based source of omega-3 (ALA) at 19.3 percent. Where can you lay your hands on this superfood? Visiting your local health food store would be your best bet. But, there are a few other possibilities, too. The next time you're perusing the bread aisle of your favourite supermarket, make a point of reading the ingredients. Some bakeries are beginning to add chia to their whole grain breads.

COBS Bread, which has outlets in a number of different cities (check their website) has just started baking Chia bread. According to the nutrition label, two slices provide 100% of the recommended daily intake of omega-3 fats and 30% of the daily recommended intake of fibre. Not bad. Having just finished my second slice, I can definitely verify that chia tastes great. Visit the Chia Company to purchase the seeds and try adding it to your own recipes.

I use chia seeds in my green smoothies.. before that I add 1 tbsp chia to 9 tbs water in a small jar, stir and refrigerate. It will turn gel like, and then you can scoop out 1 or 2 tbsp at a time for your shakes or smoothies.
