I’ve
barely been able to grapple with our entry into the twenty-first
century, when here we are at the ninth year of the new millennium
already! As a teenager, I devoured George Orwell’s 1984.
I can remember being rocked by shockwaves when I realized I would
actually be alive in ’84 (though, to my young mind, I would be
alive but extremely
old.) Back then, I never even thought about 2008. If I had, I would
have imagined silver space suits, flying cars and robotic maids named
Rosie.
Little
did I know that in 2008 I’d still be vacuuming my own floors and
sitting in traffic jams with nary a robot or flying car in sight.
What I never would have imagined is that I would still be me — just
an older, feistier version of me. As we ring in the new, I’m going
to pay homage to a year I never even dreamed about: 8 new tastes in
’08, 8 new ideas in ’08, 8 new challenges in ’08 and more than
likely 8 new pounds in ’08. Some things never change, even in the
ninth year of a fat new millennium.
